The Changing Face of
Complementary Therapy
|
| Today’s Professional
Complementary Therapist will
certainly be someone who’s well
qualified & registered with a
nationally recognised body. In
addition, they’ll be
multi-disciplined,
knowledgeable, responsible,
innovative, encouraging and
truly Holistic in their
Client-Therapist relationship. |
| Often a presented problem is
multi-faceted, with the physical
discomforts being the symptoms
of a differing cause, such as
stress, life changes, poor
posture or plain bad habits. In
such cases, a good Therapist
will not only strive to relieve
the obvious stress,
ache or pain but will
also try to look at the whole
picture & aim to gain client
confidence by encouraging them
to talk about themselves, their
home & lifestyle, work & general
health, as they, the client,
perceives it. They’ll also be
mindful not to diagnose any kind
of medical problem; rather,
they’ll seek to encourage the
client to consult with their GP
especially before undertaking
any treatment/advice that might
potentially conflict with a
known medical condition or
regimen. By working in this way,
the Therapist may help the
client to identify causes and
effects, and together develop a
management and/or resolution
plan for their problem. |
| Helping clients to gain the
confidence to take
responsibility for their own
wellbeing is a prima
facae
requirement for a good
Complementary Therapist. So not
only will the Therapist offer
their own specialism within
their chosen field, but a
session may also include
teaching clients about
relaxation techniques,
encouraging them to take
responsible exercise, helping
them improve & move to a
healthier diet/lifestyle,
becoming their mentor to achieve
those aims,
be a shoulder to cry on,
or even just provide reassurance
that Complementary Therapies can
be truly beneficial and not
simply ‘treats’ or just for
wealthy people. |
| The health improvement
benefits that regular
sessions of say Massage or
Reflexology may bring should be
highlighted: a few examples
might be – improved ability to
relax, lower stress levels,
lower blood pressure, less aches
& pain, fewer headaches or
improved circulation. However,
being the way we are, most
people wait until their problem
becomes acute before seeking
help; but for around the cost of
a loaf of bread daily, a regular
‘once-a-month’ maintenance
treatment may actually save
money in the long run, and days,
weeks, months or even years of
stress & its related problems,
discomfort, pain or immobility.
As an added bonus, almost all
treatments are soothing,
enjoyable and supremely
relaxing! |
| Slowly things are changing,
and an ever-increasing number of
people are now enjoying the
benefits these Therapies may
bring; enlightened employers are
also beginning to reap the
rewards through fewer employee
sick days. Sadly, very few
Therapies are available on the
NHS, although with their
undoubted benefits, I guess many
GP’s & Consultants would welcome
their inclusion. Notwithstanding
that, with the will, self help,
a little ingenuity and
relatively simple budgeting, the
wonderful world of Complementary
Therapies can enhance and
improve the quality of many,
many more people’s lives. |
